The Shoulder & Repetitive Strain Injuries
Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs) from computer or desk work can cause headaches, eyestrain, and pain through the neck, shoulders, arms and back. “The Shoulder” is part of a series taking a closer look at the mechanism of injury and specific injury prevention techniques for particular pain areas.

Don't Forget the Eyes!

The eyes can become tired and strained from staring at a monitor, or even a small PDA screen. Keep the screens clean, adjust the contrast and glare to maximize the readability of the print, enlarge the print when possible to a comfortable reading size.

To Relax Eye Strain

Rub the palms of the hands briskly together until warm, then close your eyes and cup your warm palms over your eyes for 1-2 minutes.

Also, rest the eyes by looking away from the screen at an object far in the distance. The 20-20-20 rule advises that for every 20 minutes of typing you take a 20 second break and look at an object 20 feet away.

Next Week - The Elbow

The next part in the RSI series will take at why the elbow is at risk for RSIs and what we can do to avoid it.
