Here's the latest article from the Attention Deficit Disorder site at BellaOnline.com.
Greetings from the very hot Land of OZ!
It is steaming here in eastern Kansas. We're having the kind of weather that we could expect in mid-July. I've done a bit of yard work. Several years ago we shocked the neighborhood when we removed our front yard's grass. My husband and I decided to xeriscape the front yard. We put in a lot of heat loving and low moisture plants. Our water bill went down, and we were rewarded with goldfinches nibbling seeds off of the coneflowers. We all need rewards, and that is what this week's article is about.
Rewarding Children and ADD
Research has shown that when a child with ADD/ADHD knows that a strong reward is waiting for him; the reward (medication also works) helps to switch off the region of the brain that controls mind wandering and that allows the child to focus attention.
The most important thing to remember about rewarding a child is to choose something that the child desires. Do this by asking the child what they want! A reward is only reinforcing when it is a preferred object or activity. It doesn’t need to be expensive; it only needs to be desired.
