Tatting

June 9 2011 Tatting Newsletter

Once upon a time, all young girls and ladies were taught the basics of needlework. It began to be assumed that if you were female, then you had been educated into all the mysteries of the needle, shuttle and hook. In fact, the belief was so prevalent that patterns began to "assume" a body of knowledge on the part of women that today's woman may not have.

I made that same mistake in the last newsletter with the Emmy Liebert pattern #27. (http://www.georgiaseitz.com/bella/emmyliebertpg16fig27.jpg)
The instructions require that the outer row of tatting be half-closed rings, not chains. So, some of my feedback this week included puzzlement over the fact that the ring was not closed. If the ring is half-closed is it still a ring? Yes, but some bare thread is showing.

If you were preplexed at this term, "half-closed ring", please visit http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2008/halfclosedrings.html. I will add a tutorial to the lessons at BellaOnline.com soon.
