Greetings from the Pediatrics site at BellaOnline! Your source for the latest and greatest information regarding your child's health.

Today's News:

Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping Benefits
Most physicians cut the umbilical cord immediately following a baby's birth. However, there are studies now proving that there are benefits to waiting until the cord stops pulsing. This usually only lasts a few minutes and allows the baby to receive additional nutrients, blood, and oxygen from the placenta. Recent studies also show that they receive high levels of hematocrit, which increases the oxygenated red blood cells in the baby's body. Obesity Becoming a Child Protection Issue
Obesity in children is a hot topic amongst parents and professionals alike. With the cases of obesity in children rising, many are asking why. What has changed to cause such a drastic increase? The answer in many cases, if not most, is obviously the nutrition offered children in today's society. McDonalds, cafeteria lunches of deep-fried foods, and grocery store shelves lined with cheap junk food to tempt both the mouth and the wallet, health is taking a turn for the worse. Because it is often preventable, it is beginning to become a child-protection issue, especially in young children. In five and six-year olds who weigh more than their adult counterpart, it can be seen as neglect. For more information, check out the article, Obesity Becoming A Child Protection Issue.
