PBA DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP NAMED IN HONOR OF MARK ROTH, MARSHALL HOLMAN
The 2011 revival of the PBA Doubles Championship will be named in honor of two PBA Tour legends – Mark Roth and Marshall Holman - who stamped their names all over the doubles competition back in its formation days.

Roth and Holman teamed up to win PBA Doubles Classic titles in 1977 and 1979 in San Jose, Calif., and again in 1984 after the event moved to Showboat Lanes in Las Vegas. The PBA Hall of Fame legends, who own a combined total of 56 PBA Tour titles, bowled as doubles partners 13 times, cashing 11 times, making match play 10 times and finishing in the top five six times.

"How could you not want your Hall Of Fame doubles partner and great friend to share the name of this event with you? It's perfect,” Roth said. “I asked Marshal to bowl with me in our first doubles tournament because he was a tough cookie and he knew how to win. We won three times together during our career. Marshall and I talk frequently, and sharing memories of those events is something we often talk about. It’s a great honor for both of us.”

“I’m absolutely honored,” Holman added. “It’s a beautiful thing.”

The revival of the Mark Roth/Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship will be a part of the 2011 PBA World Series of Bowling at South Point Casino, Hotel and Bowling Center in Las Vegas Nov. 4-20.

The doubles event will include the top 16 players after qualifying rounds in the PBA Exempt Players Championships who will be paired for an eight-team Baker format finale based upon how they qualify. The top qualifier will be the first to select a partner from among the remaining 15 players. If he/she selects the No. 11 seed, the No. 2 qualifier will pick next. If No. 1 picks No. 2 as a partner, the No. 3 qualifier will be the next to select, etc. The Baker format finals will be conducted on specially-constructed lanes in the South Point Arena on Sunday, Nov. 20.

IT WAS A WILD WEEKEND FOR PBA REGIONALS ACROSS AMERICA
From Atlantic to Pacific, it was a belated display of fireworks all over the country during a full slate of Professional Bowlers Association Regional competition over the July 11 weekend:

In Dubuque, Iowa, Dave Beres’ nine-count on on his final shot in the 10th frame was enough to give the Waukesha, Wis., resident a 278-277 victory over Tom Hess of Urbandale in the PBA Midwest Region Coors Light Kingpin Shootout at Cherry Lanes.

After both players started the championship match with nine strikes, Hess finished the match first, converting a single-pin spare on his first shot in 10th frame before leaving two pins on his fill ball. Beres then left and converted a single pin on his first attempt in the 10th frame, but got nine pins on his second shot for the single-pin margin of victory. The title was Beres’ first of the year and the third Regional title of his career. He also earned $2,500.

Kevin Cartier of Beverly, N.J., was one of two players to earn the right to compete in the 2012 PBA Tournament of Champions, defeating John Conroy of Mahopac, N.Y., 206-148, to win the PBA East Region Burlington Bowl Open at Burlington (N.J.) Bowling & Recreation Center on Sunday for his first PBA Regional title. The win earned Cartier a $2,500 pay day.

The other first-time Tournament of Champions qualifier was Mike Bailey of Frisco, Texas, who defeated Brett Cooper of Fort Worth, Texas, 258-211, to win the PBA Southwest Region Waxahachie Open at Hilltop Super Bowl in Waxahachie, Texas. Bailey, who had finished fourth in the joint PBA Southwest/Midwest Regional Wichita Open last month, lost only one game in the single-elimination match play finals on his way to his first title.

Out west, a couple of familiar names duked it out in Mission Viejo, Calif. Former PBA Tour exempt player Ben Laughlin of Phoenix defeated 2010-11 PBA Rookie of the Year Scott Norton of Costa Mesa, Calif., 238-183, to win the PBA West Region’s Saddleback Open at Saddleback Lanes. Laughlin earned $2,000 along with his 12th PBA Regional title.

While the Mission Viejo tournament was a relatively low-scoring event, there were two 300 games bowled – by Mike DeVaney of Murrieta, Calif., and Robert Piroozshad of Huntington Beach, Calif. Ironically, the perfect games were bowled against each other in a 300-300 tie during the round robin match play portion of the event.

In the meantime, the PBA South Region had an “old school” special event – literally. Charlie Tomey, 61, of Spartanburg, S.C., defeated 62-year-old amateur Bill Tharp of Rome, Ga., 183-170, to win the inaugural PBA Winston-Salem Super Senior Open at Northside Lanes in Winston-Salem, N.C.

It was the first PBA event ever held exclusively for players ages 60 and older, drawing a field of 57 players including 17 who were 70 or older. The win was Tomey’s third in PBA regional competition and he earned $1,400 along with his title.

In Cincinnati, Ohio, Patrick Dombrowski of Parma, Ohio, defeated Brian Himmler of Cincinnati by 47 pins to win the PBA Central Region’s Storm Products/Beechmont Toyota Open at Cherry Grove Lanes on Sunday. Dombrowski finished with an 8-4 match play record and a 20-game total of 4,820 pins including match play bonus pins for a $2,400 prize and his fifth career PBA Regional title.

The Cincinnati event drew a strong field of PBA Tour exempt players. Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C., finished fourth; Pete Weber, St. Ann, Mo., was fifth; Dan MacLelland, Saginaw, Mich., was sixth, and Chris Loschetter, Avon, Ohio, was eighth.

Rounding out the weekend, Mitch Jabczenski of Novi, Mich., defeated Bill Henson of Westerville, Ohio, 202-161, to win the PBA Midwest/Central Region Liberty Lanes Senior Open sponsored by Allstate Insurance in Carpentersville, Ill., on Sunday. The title was Jabczenski’s first of the year in the PBA Midwest Region and the ninth of his career. He earned $1,500.

Another action-packed weekend of PBA Regional competition is coming this week, including: the PBA East Region Mil-Ray Foods Senior Open at Playdrome Cherry Hill in Cherry Hill, N.J.; the PBA Central Region Dan Kondas Memorial at Legend Lanes in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; the PBA Midwest/Central Region Laraway Lanes Senior Open presented by Allstate Insurance in New Lenox, Ill.; the PBA Southwest/Midwest Jonesboro Open at Jonesboro (Ark.) Bowling Center; and a standard/senior doubleheader for the PBA West and Northwest Regions at Secoma Lanes in Federal Way, Wash.

Finland’s Osku Palermaa, who earned his 2011-12 exemption to bowl on the PBA Tour by winning his first PBA Tour title in the 2010 GEICO Shark Championship, is a new father. Wife Veronica delivered an as-yet unnamed daughter on July 6. (For statisticians, the newcomer weighed in at 7.9 pounds and measured 20.5 inches).
