PBA EAST REGION’S APPLETREE CLASSIC TO OFFER RECORD $10,000 FIRST PRIZE
Thanks to the sponsorship of Appletree Answering Service, the third annual Professional Bowlers Association East Regional tournament at Mid County Lanes in Middletown, Del., July 29-31, will offer one of the richest first prizes in PBA Regional tournament history.
Under the sponsorship of Wilmington, Del.-based Appletree Answering Service, the Appletree Classic will offer a projected winner's check of $10,000, which is unofficially the richest first prize ever offered in a PBA East Region tournament.
"We're excited to be this year's sponsor of the Appletree Classic," says John Ratliff, CEO of Appletree Answering Service. "As a bowler myself, it's very rewarding to support players and the sport that I love and admire."
The Appletree Classic will begin with pro-am squads on Friday, July 29. Qualifying will be held Saturday with the top 16 qualifiers returning Sunday for 16 games of round-robin match play to determine the champion. David Kneas of Annapolis, Md., won the inaugural Mid County Lanes Open in 2009. Danny Wiseman of Baltimore is the defending champion.

The inaugural Dick Weber PBA Playoffs, hosted by Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis, is among six candidates for SportsTravel magazine’s “best new sporting events” for 2010. Voting is open to SportsTravel subscribers only.
Competition in SportsTravel’’s annual “best new events” competition is open to all sports, professional and amateur. Other candidates in the new events (professional or amateur) category are: the Myrtle Beach Mini-Marathon, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; USA Water Ski Grassroots National Championships, Polk City, Fla.; Youth Olympic Games, Singapore; Last Cowboy Standing, Las Vegas, and the USA Gymnastics Open Championships, Orlando, Fla. The SportsTravel Awards will be presented at the TEAMS '11 Conference & Expo, Oct. 3-6, in Las Vegas.

WARREN WINS 32ND REGIONAL TITLE, MOVES INTO TIE FOR SIXTH ON ALL-TIME LIST
Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore., moved into a tie for sixth place on the career PBA Regional titles list Sunday when he posted an 8-8 match play record and a 24-game total of 5,633 pins to win his 32nd career regional title in the joint PBA Northwest/West Region Secoma Lanes Open.
Warren, who earned $3,000, defeated Blaine Weninger of Aurora, Ore., by two pins for his third regional title of the 2011-12 season. He is now tied with fellow PBA West/Northwest Region veterans Ross Packard of San Jose, Calif., and Hugh Miller of Mercer Island, Wash., with 32 standard PBA Regional titles. Pete Weber remains the all-time PBA Regional titles leader with 45.
In the companion Northwest/West Senior Open, Kevin Croucher of Grants Pass, Ore., went 4-4 and knocked down 3,633 total pins to top Noel Vazquez of Sacramento, Calif., for his second Northwest Senior Regional title and a $2,000 payday.
In Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., defeated Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio, by 333 pins to win the PBA Central Region’s Dan Kondas Memorial Open at Legend Lanes on Sunday. Ciminelli finished with a 9-3 match play record and a total of 5,188 pins for 20 games, including match play bonus pins, to earn his second Central Region title of the season and the sixth of his career. He also earned $2,300.
Right behind Loschetter were fellow PBA Tour exempt players Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y., in third; Brian Kretzer, Kettering, Ohio, in fourth, and Ryan Shafer, Horseheads, N.Y., in fifth.
In Jonesboro, Ark., Tyler Jensen of Fort Worth, Texas, dominated the field to win his 10th PBA Regional title at the 15th annual PBA Southwest/Midwest Region Greater Jonesboro Open at Jonesboro Bowling Center Sunday. Jensen earned $3,500 after winning his first 10 matches to race away from the field. He finished with a 20-game total of 4,804 pins, including match play bonus pins, to top Tom Hess of Urbandale, Iowa, by 188 pins.
In New Lenox, Ill., Charlie Tapp of Kalamazoo, Mich., denied Kenny Parks of Hammond, Ind., his fourth PBA Senior Regional title of the 2011-12 season, defeating Parks, 225-207, to win the PBA Midwest/Central Region Laraway Lanes Senior Open presented by Allstate Insurance on Sunday. Tapp claimed his third PBA Regional title, but first as in Senior Regional competition. He also earned $1,500.
In the PBA East Region, Mark Glover of Woodbridge, Va., handed Sam Maccarone of Sewell, N.J., his third consecutive runnerup finish, 258-225, in the Mil-Ray Foods Senior Open at Playdrome Cherry Hill in Cherry Hill, N.J., on Sunday. The win was Glover’s sixth in Regional competition, but his first as a senior. He also earned $1,500.
Next weekend’s round of PBA Regional events heading toward the 2012 Xtra Frame Dick Weber PBA Playoffs includes: the PBA East Region Cap Card Open at Cedar Lanes in Lebanon, Pa.; the PBA South Region Fayetteville (N.C.) Open at Lafayette Lanes; a joint PBA Midwest/Central Region Illinois Valley Classic Super Regional (projected first prize $4,500) at Illinois Valley Super Bowl in Peru, Ill., and the joint PBA West/Northwest Sands Regency Regular/Senior Doubles event at High Sierra Lanes in Reno, Nev.
