Swimming Safety and ADD

Greetings from the Land of OZ!

As we were driving into the wilds of Oklahoma for our vacation recently, I heard a radio program about water safety. I immediately knew that it was something that I needed to write about. Drowning can happen in a minute, literally. For small children, it can happen in a six-inch-deep pool. I know. I was caring for a small child and my one-year-old son. We were all sitting in a shallow wading pool together. I had a tiny tot on each side of me. I turned to wipe the little girl's nose. It was just a moment. As I turned around and looked down, I saw my son on his back, with his head completely submerged. It was a chilling moment. We also had a backyard pool surrounded by a six-foot fence with a self-locking gate. As our adventure child grew larger, we took our large pool down, since he loved the water and would try to find ways into the pool.

Impulsivity and executive function are hallmarks of Attention Deficit Disorder. What does that mean, and how can it impact swimming safety? What does an expert on swimming safety have to say about drowning? Why should parents know the signs of drowning? How can drowning be prevented?
