Telling Relatives About a Child with ADD

Greetings from the Land of OZ!

It's blazing hot (105 today) in Kansas, but something that makes me "hot under the collar" is the way that parents with hyperactive kids are treated by the public. When you have a child with hyperactivity, it seems that everybody is an expert on your child's behaviors. Strangers will stop you to give their opinions. An ADD/ADHD diagnosis brings some relief. Now you know what is happening and can address the issues.

One of the largest issues is your child's self-esteem. On a daily basis, with every reprimand, they are learning how they are perceived. Kids who have hyperactivity are in trouble a lot of the time. For many of them, much of their time at school is painful.

While having a diagnosis can help you with the issues, it brings a certain amount of fear for people who only know what they have heard in the mainstream press. You are educated about ADD/ADHD. So, what do you tell your relatives to increase their understanding of your child's needs?

If you could think of a different, and better, name for Attention Deficit Disorder, what would it be? There is a power in words! Having "deficit" and "disorder" in the same name to describe a brain difference is destructive. That's my opinion. What's yours? Now, your turn. Let us know in the forum.
