Tatting

July 7 2015 Tatting Newsletter

In earlier newsletters many examples of tatting mixed with other needlework types have been discussed. Tatting combines with teneriffe, crochet, coronation cord, needle weaving, hairpin lace, soutache braid and metal findings quite well. And, tatting has been combined with rickrack with excellent results.

The February issue of Needlecraft Magazine 1927 featured several tatted motifs combined with tatting. Gina Brummet reproduced one example in brightly colored variegated thread and paired it with brilliant red rickrack. Red is bright and eye catching but a quick bit of research online shows that rick rack has really been updated.

The new rickrack comes in widths from 1/4" through 1 7/8". And the color range is beautiful. The standard primary colors and pastel colors are now augmented with metallics, glitter and iridescent styles. I was particularly pleased to see rainbow variegated rickrack too. These variegated styles would be stunning paired with the new Lizbeth threads.

Pg. 24 has only one pattern of tatting. It is a round medallion or alternating rings and chains. And, suitably enough, the second round is all tatted chain in the rick rack or Victorian sets style. Round 3 is alternating cloverleaf and chains with floating rings. Both the chains and floating rings are joined to the large size rickrack. An additional round of chain attaching also to the rickrack finishes the motif.

Just imagine the possibilities of modernizing this medallion with brightly colored rickrack and coordinating Lizbeth thread.
