PBA CREATES INTERNATIONAL BOWLING AWARENESS THROUGH EUROSPORT RENEWAL
While television air waves around the world are saturated with Olympic Games coverage, the Professional Bowlers Association is creating awareness for bowling - a non-Olympic sport - through a renewal of an agreement with Eurosport to air the full 2011-12 PBA Tour schedule on its Eurosport 2 network.
The absence of bowling from the Olympic program, a long-standing sore spot among the worldfs millions of bowling participants, wasnft lost on one of the sportfs high-profile enthusiasts. While doing his best to help Team USA win the Olympic gold medal in basketball, Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul - host of the Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational bowling event for the past four years - went on his Twitter account to ask the world, "Why isn't bowling in the Olympics? It should be."
gWith an increasing number of world-class international players, and a growing number of international PBA Tour events, the Eurosport partnership will not only increase international exposure for the PBA Tour, but also bring the sport to a growing fan base worldwide,h said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark.
The PBA began its relationship with Eurosport in 2009 when Eurosport aired all of the 2008-09 PBA Tour telecasts. The international sports television outlet provides programming including soccer, motor sports, tennis, cricket, Australian football and Olympic coverage among many others. Eurosport 2 is one of the fastest-growing TV channels in Europe, reaching 50 million households in 16 languages across 47 countries.
ENTRIES NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR PBA WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING IV
Entries are now open for PBA World Series of Bowling IV, which is set for Nov. 2-11 at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas. All entry information is posted on pba.com through a link on the pba.com home page.
The fourth annual multi-event program is open to PBA gfullh members and PBA International members. The $750 entry fee includes entry into the PBA Cheetah, Viper, Scorpion and Chameleon Championships along with the PBA World Championship. The field is limited to the first 240 entrants.
Two of the bowlers in the field will be Saginaw Valley State Universityfs Aaron Lorincz and University of Central Oklahoma bowler Grace Hall, who earned entries into WSOB IV as winners of the 2012 Collegiate Masters, held recently in Wickliffe, Ohio. Lorincz won the menfs division title and WSOB berth with a 213-182, 219-182 victory over Chris Via of Notre Dame College. Hall defeated Thea Aspira of Norfolk State, 193-183, 236-213 for the womenfs title.
The World Series field also will include four individual ganimal patternh competitors and an overall ganimal patternh points champion from each of the PBAfs seven regional programs (a total of 35 players).

œ Bill OfNeill of Langhorne, Pa., defeated Travis Celmer of Wernersville, Pa., 233-198, to win the PBA East Region Bowlers Supply/Storm Products Cheetah Open at Colony Park Lanes North in York, Pa., on Sunday, Aug. 4.
Celmer started with five strikes, but left three consecutive splits in the last half of the game while OfNeill found his strike shot. OfNeill collected $3,000, his ninth career regional title and the East Regionfs fourth and final paid entry into the 2012 PBA World Series of Bowling as highest finisher among players who entered the regionfs optional ganimal patternh championship series competition.
OfNeill joins Brad Angelo of Lockport, N.Y.; Greg Ostrander of Freehold, N.J., and Joe Paluszek of Bensalem, Pa., as East Region animal pattern championship winners. Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y. earned the final East Region entry into the World Series of Bowling IV as the highest points earner in the four events.
œ Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., earned his 82nd overall PBA title Sunday, defeating Rick Minier of Houston, 267-182, in the PBA Midwest/Central Senior Beverly Lanes Senior Open presented by Allstate Insurance in Arlington Heights, Ill. After beginning the final game with 7 consecutive strikes, Williams of Ocala, Fla., left a 10-pin to thwart the perfect game bid.
Williams eliminated defending champ Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Township, Mich., in the semifinal game, 259-214. It was Williams' 31st overall regional title to go with his record 47 PBA Tour titles and four Senior Tour wins.
œ On Thursday, Aug. 2, Kevin Foley of Reno, Nev., defeated Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., by 83 pins to win the joint PBA Central/Midwest Regionfs Gerdeman Insurance Senior Classic presented by Brunswick at Al-Mar Lanes in Bowling Green, Ohio.
The Bowling Green event featured a unique progressive pinfall format wherein the tournament leaders continued to accumulate pins, but the field was cut in half after each round. After the first eight games, the top 32 players advanced to a four-game Round of 32. The field was then trimmed to 16. After three more games, eight players advance to a two-game Round of 8. The top four then bowled an 18th game to determine the final standings.
After 18 games, Foley compiled a total of 4,553 pins, easily holding onto the 114-pin cushion he held over Williams heading into the final game. Foley earned $4,000 along with his first PBA Regional title. Williams, who finished with 4,470 pins, earned $2,200 for second place.
œ In the PBA South Region, Matt Taylor of Knightdale, N.C., defeated Steven Arehart of Chesapeake, Va., 227-214, to win the Fayetteville Open at Lafayette Lanes in Fayetteville, N.C., on Sunday for his second career regional title. Taylor, who earned $2,000, posted a 9-3 match play record to qualify second for the stepladder finals. He nipped amateur Chip Collins of Fayetteville, 201-200, to advance to the title match.
œ Correction on PBA Central Region ganimal patternh championships: Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa., was the regionfs overall points winner for the four animal pattern events, not Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio, as previously reported.
The Aug. 10-12 weekend schedule includes the PBA Midwest Region Challenge (non-champions) Open presented by Roto Grip at St. Charles (Mo.) Lanes; the PBA Central Region Boss Snow Plows/Track Open, a Saturday-only event at PinHeads Bowling Center in Fishers, Ind.; the PBA South Region Gaffney (S.C.) Open at Gaffney Entertainment Center; the PBA East Region Colony Park Lanes Senior Open in York, Pa.; the PBA West Regionfs Fog City Open and Fog City Senior Open at Daly City (Calif.) Bowling Center, and the PBA Southwest Region Chameleon Open at Hallmark Lanes in Killeen, Texas.
In all PBA regional animal pattern championships, players can pay an optional animal pattern entry fee for the right to win a paid entry into the PBA World Series of Bowling, Nov. 2-11 at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas. In all seven PBA Regions, the player who accumulates the highest number of competition points in the regionfs four animal pattern events (Cheetah, Scorpion, Chameleon and Viper) will earn a World Series entry, whether or not he participates in the goptionalh entry program.
