Vintage Pattern Origins
Hello tatters! I have recently received a few questions and some feedback about the tatting patterns which have been posted on the tatting section of BellaOnline.com. I write newsletters about tatting events, tatting book reviews, and instructional tatting information.
I post patterns which are brand new and shared with us by online tatters many of whom are members of the Online Tatting Class, various online tatting groups (for example, facebook groups), local, national and international lace organizations. I welcome submissions to share also. All new original patterns should include a jpg photo of the finished tatting, the written pattern, preferably in tatter's shorthand, i.e., R = 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 clr, and/or a numbered diagram. And free assistance is available for writing up the pattern and drawing the diagrams. The tatter will also need to complete an online permission slip before it is published.
Many of the basic tatting instructional tutorials are already posted on the site. If a specific topic is needed, PLEASE request it any time.
The type of pattern posted is in response to requests also. The website counts the numbers of request for tatted jewelry, for vintage collars, for 3-dimensional tatting and many other topics. So, this summer we have seen several patterns for pieces of jewelry, necklaces, bracelets and many earrings, and a variety of patterns of vintage origins.
The searches for vintage tatting patterns on the tatting site number over 1,000, with jewelry coming in at about 600 searches. So the patterns lately have been oldies but goodies such as:
Entredeux by Johanna Rubli "Frivolités" by Miss Johanna Rubli from Zug, Switzerland was published in 1917.

Daisy Medallion, this pattern was published in a 1922 Home Arts &
Entertainment magazine.
Snowflake, L Hauck 1915. Louise Hauck, editor, of "Tatting of
Today" pub. by Ladies' World began this pattern with a lesson on how to finish the ends.

Camisole Yoke Antique. A hen and chicks and cloverleaf for an antique camisole unknown origin from the files of the Online Tatting Class
Comfort Tatting Feb. 1925 The Comfort Magazine was published by William H.
Gannet, Inc. Augusta Maine from 1888 through 1942. It was but one of many
inexpensive pulp magazines geared toward housewives. It has the distinction of
being the first of this type of magazine to have over one million
subscribers. The needle artists, called the Comfort Workers, included
Mrs. F.L. Smith, Mrs. Frank Beal, Gladys Williams, Helen Merritt, Mrs. Nellie
B. (Wheeler) Wilkinson and others.
Note: whenever I write about vintage needle workers, especially tatters, I try to include their names and other info in the continuing battle against the statement, "made, wrote, designed by unknown, or A Lady." And I think is helpful to include all the publications by Mlle Riego as well.
Mlle Riego published 72 books on the needle arts of which 13 were tatting books
(11 books and 2 reprints.) Mlle Riego began with borders and insertions in
tatting and went on to create gold medal award winning tatting featured at the
world expositions 1851, 1855, 1862 and 1872. All of her books are in public
domain and may be downloaded free.
