Tatters may recall that I have always written that a tatter can reproduce a tatting design from a close up photograph and patience. So, tatters may find this an interesting exercise in diagramming or writing patterns, too. This antique German tatting book is one which had only photos no text, "Die Schiffchenarbeit."

Original Cover.
There are no patterns. There are no diagrams. Just close up detailed photos of the tatting. The tatter will be able to recreate these designs without difficulty. The booklet is 8.5" x 11" and has 12 pages. There is no clue as to the designer nor the purpose of the book (original cover). It appears to me that it might even have been a "stock" book of patterns tatted for sale, although no price appears anywhere in the booklet. There are some familiar early 20th century style patterns and several uses of the "onion rings" (rings surrounded by rings not chains,) please review: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art52553.asp. Nine doilies, two corners, several individual motifs and many edgings suitable for both needle and shuttle tatting.
