In the pages of the Needlecraft Magazine 1931 Oct. pg. 31 Vol. XXIII No. 2 I found a set of three edgings designed by Marie Haase. As seen in the photo each of them was sewn to a header of fabric. This makes it easy to reuse the lace and sew it more easily to clothing, too. This one looks rather like a line of fancy fans with a frilly edge.
It is tatted in three rows with the first row being one shuttle work only and row 2 is all chains, while row 3 is a repeating ring and chain pattern. The chains join using the "down join." It is important that the picots maintain regularity in length as with her earlier pattern.
Begin with one shuttle or needle and ball thread. All the rings will have a bare thread space between them which is used later to baste to the fabric. A picot gauge is suggested when measuring the picots.
Row 1
Ring A R 5 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 5 close ring (clr) do not reverse work (dnrw) leave space of bare thread (bts)
Ring B R 2 + (join to last picot of ring A) 4 - 2 clr dnrw bts
Ring C R 2 + (join to last picot of ring B) 4 - 2 clr dnrw bts
Ring D R 2 + (join to last picot of ring C) 4 - 2 clr dnrw bts
Repeat rings A - D joining ring A to ring D as shown.
Row 2 is all chains which may be joined to row 1 using the down join. Use two shuttles or needle and ball thread.
*Join thread to the upper leg of the joined picot between rings B and C of row 1.
CH + 4 - 4 + to the upper leg of the joined picot between rings C and D of row 1.
CH 3 + (join to picot of large ring A) 3 - 3 + (join to next picot of large ring A) continue joining to the rest of the ring A picots
Repeat from *
Row 3 is the repeating ring and chain row using 2 shuttles or one shuttle/needle and ball thread.
***Join thread to the picot on the row 2 chain which is above ring C in row 1.
CH 4 dnrw prepare floating ring (fr)
**dnrw FR 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 clr dnrw (join to next picot on chain of row 2) continue ch 7
Repeat from ** twice.
FR 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 clr dnrw (join to next picot on chain of row 2) continue ch 4
***Repeat from ***across.
Since this is made in 3 steps it is a great spot to introduce color. And just imagine place bugle beads on those long picots. There are a lot of possibilities in this one pattern.
