YOU CAN HELP KULICK WIN WSF¡¯S SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
Bowling fans can help Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., the first woman to capture a title in the 51-year history of the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour, win the Women¡¯s Sports Foundation¡¯s most prestigious award: Sportswoman of the Year.

Kulick, who also won the 2009 PBA Women¡¯s World Championship, PBA Women¡¯s Series Shark Championship, 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions, Canon Malaysian International Open, USBC Queens and U.S. Women¡¯s Open in a span of nine months, is one of 10 women nominated for the WSF¡¯s award for most outstanding individual performance by a woman athlete. Her string of four consecutive ¡°major¡± championships is unprecedented in bowling, and no woman has ever won the USBC Queens and U.S. Women¡¯s Open in the same year.

The award will be presented Oct. 12 at the 31st Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards at New York City¡¯s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Finalists will be voted on by The Women¡¯s Sports Foundation membership and through online voting. Fans can cast their votes until Aug. 31, 2010 at midnight Eastern by visiting the Women's Sports Foundation website (it is a dot org) and clicking on the ¡°Vote Today¡± logo on the home page.

Twenty athletes from 20 sports, including 10 individuals and 10 for team competition, have been nominated for Sportswoman of the Year based on athletic achievements from Aug. 1, 2009 through July 31, 2010.

Kulick, 33, was a finalist in the team-sport category last year as a member of Team USA. She said her nomination helps bring recognition to the sport of bowling and she ¡°hopes when they see the resume, they will appreciate the year I¡¯ve had.¡± Come October, she said, she would ¡°love to be on that stage¡± with Women¡¯s Sports Foundation founder Billie Jean King.

King, a tennis great who beat Bobby Riggs in a ¡°Battle of the Sexes¡± match, congratulated Kulick after her PBA Tournament of Champions victory over Chris Barnes by saying it was ¡°not only historic, it serves as a motivational and inspirational event for girls and women competing at all levels all around the world.¡±

Other nominees in in the individual-sport category are: Torah Bright, snowboarding; Rebecca Bross, gymnastics; Yu-Na Kim, figure skating; Ai Miyazato, golf; Alana Nichols, paralympic skiing; Sanya Richards, track and field; Anna Tunnicliffe, sailing; Lindsey Vonn, skiing, and Serena Williams, tennis.

PBA STARS LEAD TEAM USA TO RECORD GOLD MEDAL HAUL IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Team USA, featuring six Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour stars, won a record five gold medals in the World Tenpin Bowling Association World Men¡¯s Championships at Dream Bowl Palace in Munich, Germany, capped by Chris Barnes¡¯ gold-medal victory over Patrick Allen in the Masters title match to conclude the event on Aug. 21.

Barnes defeated Allen, 3-0, in the best-of-five-game title match to win a Masters gold medal that had eluded him in his previous tours of duty with Team USA. Allen defeated Wes Malott, 3-0, while Barnes eliminated Korea¡¯s Choi Bok-Eum, 3-2, to advance to the gold medal match. Malott and Choi earned bronze medals.

Bill O¡¯Neill opened the championships with a gold medal performance in singles. Sweden won doubles ¨C the only event Team USA did not win gold ¨C with Allen and Rhino Page earning a bronze medal. Allen, Page and Malott then won the trios gold medal with Barnes, O¡¯Neill and Tommy Jones picking up another bronze medal. The group then won the five-man team gold medal for the third consecutive time, defeating Finland in the title match. PBA Tour titlist Mika Koivuniemi was a member of Finland¡¯s team. O¡¯Neill added a gold in all-events with Barnes winning silver.

"This is something we have been working toward for six months now," Barnes said. "Instead of competing against each other like we do on the PBA Tour, it's nice to come together and really bond as a team. It all came together at a big moment and it feels great."

WEBB JOINS ROTH AS ONLY PBA TOUR/SENIOR PBA PLAYERS OF THE YEAR
Wayne Webb did it the hard way, but the veteran from Columbus, Ohio, overcame a nagging knee injury to not only win the final PBA Senior Tour event of the year ¨C the Jackson (Mich.) Senior Open ¨C on Aug. 25, but he joined fellow PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth as only the second player ever to win PBA Senior and PBA Tour Player of the Year honors.

Needing to finish third or higher to lock up the 2010 PBA Senior Player of the Year points title in the event of a Walter Ray Williams Jr. victory, Webb qualified 25th for the single-elimination match play finals. He then became the first player in Senior Tour history to advance from 25th to victory in single-elimination competition, defeating Ray Johnson of Battle Creek, Mich., 211-194, in the title match. (Incidentally, Johnson was the No. 26 qualifier).

The title ¨C Webb¡¯s third of the year and fifth of his career ¨C turned a close Senior Player of the Year race into a rout. Webb finished the season with 64 points. Walter Ray Williams Jr. was second with 36 and Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, was third with 32 points.

Webb, despite missing a pair of Senior Tour events, also won the earnings title with $41,900 and the competition points title. Williams Jr. was the average leader, bowling at a 225.49 pace.

Thanks to his victories in the Senior Columbus Open and the USBC Senior Masters earlier in the season, Webb also joined Dick Weber, Johnny Petraglia and Dave Soutar as the fourth player to win PBA titles in five different decades. Weber is the only one to win in six decades.

ESPN CLASSIC TO AIR MARATHON OF ESPN-TELEVISED PBA PERFECT GAMES
ESPN Classic has scheduled an eight-hour marathon of ¡°bowling perfection¡± for Sunday, Sept. 5. Beginning at noon Eastern, ESPN Classic will re-broadcast eight nationally-televised 300 games bowled in PBA finals which aired on ESPN over the past 20 years.

McCUNE NOTCHES 18TH REGIONAL VICTORY IN INDIANA
Covered live on Xtra Frame with "The Bowling Doctor" Jeff Mark, Eugene McCune of Munster, Ind. won his 18th career PBA Regional title at the PBA Central Region Elite Motors/Backhaul Direct Open Aug. 22 at Crest Lanes in Marion, Ind. McCune defeated former exempt player Billy Oatman of Chicago, 265-243, to win the $2,400 first prize. Exempt players Ronnie Russell of Marion, Ind., and Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio finished third and fifth, respectively. PBA Women's Series champion Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., finished fourth. PBA Senior and exempt tour player Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa., rounded out the top six.

In the East Region, Gary Shultis of Levittown, N.Y., notched his second consecutive and eighth career PBA Senior Regional title ¨C his 16th overall regional title ¨C by winning the PBA East Region Colony Park Lanes Senior Open in York, Pa., on Sunday. Shultis defeated PBA Tour titlist Sam Maccarone of Glassboro, N.J., 222-203, for the title and a $1,400 top prize. PBA Hall of Famer George Pappas of Charlotte, N.C., finished sixth.

In the PBA Midwest, David Traber of Hebron, Ill., earned his 24th career PBA Regional title and $2,300 in the Fast Lane Open in Chillicothe, Mo., defeating South Dakota¡¯s Ricky Beck by 31 pins. PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., finished third. Former exempt player Derek Sapp of Keokuk, Iowa, finished ninth and in-coming exempt player David Beres of Waukesha, Wis., finished 10th.

In the Northwest Region, 2002 USBC Masters champion Bryon Smith of Roseburg, Ore., earned his fifth career PBA Regional title in the Dave Husted Open Aug. 22 at Milwaukie Bowl in Milwaukie, Ore. Smith, who is qualified for the "Elite" field for the upcoming 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions Jan. 15-22 at Red Rock in Las Vegas based on his USBC Masters title, earned $2,400 with his 194-184 victory over exempt player Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore. Husted, a PBA Hall of Famer, finished fourth in the event that bears his name.

In the PBA South, exempt player Ritchie Allen of Columbia, S.C. won his ninth PBA Regional title and $2,200 in the Columbia, S.C. Open at Royal Z Lanes Sunday, defeating Scott Newell of Deland, Fla., by 201 pins in a 21-game pinfall event. Former exempt players Jason Sterner of McDonough, Ga., and Randy Weiss of Columbia finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

In the Southwest Region, former exempt player Nathan Bohr of Wichita, Kan., earned his 10th career PBA Regional title in the Killeen Open Sunday at Hallmark Lanes in Killeen, Texas. Bohr defeated exempt player and eight-time PBA Tour champion Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, 218-184, for the $2,500 top prize. Exempt player Lonnie Waliczek of Wichita finished ninth.
