Performance Art may bring to mind dance. But what about still photography? Cindy Sherman's "Untitled Film Stills" series is simply amazing. All sixty-nine of her black and white photographs were acquired by the Musuem of Modern Art in NY in December 1995. This was to insure that this landmark body of work would be preserved in its entirety in a single public collection. Cindy Sherman began making these pictures in 1977, when she was twenty-three. The first six were an experiment. The photographs look like movie stills or publicity pictures. Sherman has acted out the roles of domesticated sex kitten (#14), the hot-blooded woman of the poeople (#35), the ice-cold sophisticate (#50) to name just a few. She completed the series in 1980. She stopped because she says she ran out of cliches. Her film stills look and function just like the real ones. Those 8 X 10 inch glossies are designed to lure us into a drama we find all the more compelling because we know it is not real. Buy Posters Here From AllPosters.com
