August 6 2005 Art Appreciation Newsletter
For those of us who have family members that served in World War II, it is fun to go back in time and look at old photos. Smithsonian magazine is a favorite read of mine and an interesting article that they publish is, "This Month in History." I will share one of the stories with you, my Bellaonline.com readers.
In August 1945 Americans celebrated V-J Day, victory over Japan, thus the end of WW II. I looked at the famous photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, New York.
It was stated that at least 14 men and women have claimed to be this famous couple and that it is Life magazine's most requested photograph. (Make that 15 couples as my father served in World War II and my mother was registered nurse.)
This shows the significance of photography and the moment it captures as if frozen in time forever. The phrase "a picture's worth a thousand words" still rings true today.
