PBA REGIONAL ROUNDUP: WILLIAMS WINS, BUT DOYLE ADDS TO YOUTHFUL RÉSUMÉ
Newly-crowned PBA Senior Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., won Sunday’s PBA South Region Scorpion Open at Cherokee Lanes in Canton, Ga., but it was 14-year-old amateur Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tenn., who continued to dazzle the bowling world with another eye-opening performance.

Williams, 52, defeated Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C., 255-172, to win the final South Region animal pattern championship of the season. It was Williams’ 31st standard PBA Regional title and 85th overall PBA title (47 PBA Tour, four Senior Tour and three Senior Regional titles). He advanced to the title match after eliminating Doyle in the semifinal round, 226-214.

Doyle’s third-place finish was his highest ever in PBA competition, but not his first sterling performance. In 2010, also in Canton, Doyle became the youngest player in PBA history to “cash” in a regional tournament when he finished 30th in an event also won by Williams. Earlier in 2012, Doyle became the youngest player ever (also at age 14) to cash in the U.S. Open, finished 61st in a world-class field of professional and amateur bowlers in North Brunswick, N.J.

As an amateur, Doyle is not allowed to accept money, but his earnings are deposited into his growing USBC SMART scholarship account.

For the record, the youngest bowler ever to win a PBA Regional title was Pete Weber, who won a PBA Midwest Regional tournament in St. Louis at age 17. Doyle is the youngest ever to finish as high a third place. In April, Wesley Low of Palmdale, Calif., also finished third in a PBA West Region non-champions tournament at the age of 14 years, 344 days. Low is 126 days older than Doyle.

Mike Williams II of Montgomery, Ala., won the South Region’s Scorpion Open entry into PBA World Series of Bowling IV as the highest finisher in the optional animal pattern entry program because Williams had won an entry in a previous event. Jason Sterner of Riverdale, Ga., also won a World Series entry as the East Region’s overall points leader in the fourth animal pattern events.

The South Region’s Viper Open winner was Zach Brown, Raleigh, N.C.; Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla., won the Chameleon Open and amateur Jason Mahr of Spring Hills, Fla., was the Cheetah Open winner.

● In the PBA Southwest Region, Nathan Bohr of Derby, Kan., defeated Dino Castillo of Carrollton, Texas, 199-194, to win his 13th regional title Sunday in the Greenville (Texas) Scorpion Open presented by DV8 at DB’s Sports Grill & Bowl.

Both players earned paid entries into the 2012 PBA World Series of Bowling in the Southwest Region’s fourth and final animal pattern championship event. Castillo was the highest finisher in the optional animal pattern entry program while Bohr won his WSOB berth as the overall points leader in the region’s four animal pattern tournaments.

Earlier in the season, Chris Hibbitts II of Fort Worth, Texas, won the Southwest Region’s Viper Open while PBA Tour veteran Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, won both the Cheetah Open and Chameleon Open titles.

● In the PBA Midwest Region, Dave Traber of Hebron, Ill., defeated Jeff Richgels of Madison, Wis., 216-215, to win the Premiere Bowling & Entertainment Center Cheetah Open presented by Brunswick in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, on Sunday.

The title, in the fourth of the Midwest Region’s four “animal pattern” championship tournaments, included a $2,500 prize. It was Traber’s 29th career regional title and his second straight animal pattern win. He also won the Illinois Valley Viper Classic in late July.

Eugene McCune of Munster, Ind., who finished third, earned a paid entry into the 2012 PBA World Series of Bowling as the highest finisher in the optional animal pattern entry competition. Traber’s victory also earned him a WSOB entry as the winner of the four-tournament animal pattern points competition.

Earlier in the season, Jason Wojnar of Chicago won the Midwest Region’s Scorpion Open and PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber won the Chameleon Open.

● In the PBA East Region, Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., defeated amateur Robert Smith of Voorhees, N.J., 182-173, to win the Mil-Ray Foods Open at 30 Strikes in Stratford, N.J., on Sunday. Shafer successfully defended his 2011 Mil-Ray Foods title, earning $2,500 and his 19th career regional title, when Smith - bowling in his first PBA Regional event – failed to double in the 10th frame.

Labor Day weekend will wrap up the seven-region animal pattern championship program when the PBA West Region hosts its Don Johnson Memorial Chameleon Open presented by Brunswick at Fourth Street Bowl in San Jose, Calif. The Don Johnson Memorial, which also will include PBA Northwest players, includes a companion PBA Senior event. Other Labor Day weekend events include the PBA East Region Strike Zone Senior Open in Pottsville, Pa.; the PBA South Region Vero Bowl Classic in Vero Beach, Fla., and the PBA Southwest Region Miller/Coors Open presented by Roto Grip at Golden Bowl in Golden, Colo.

REGIONAL PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIPS DATES, LOCATIONS TO BE ANNOUNCED
Dates and locations for the new PBA Regional Players Championships, announced earlier this week, will be announced later in the season. Qualifying for the program in the PBA’s seven regions will end on July 15, 2013, which means championship events in the East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest and combined West-Northwest Regions will be held between August and October. Winners of each RPI will earn a paid entry into the 2013 PBA World Series of Bowling, which is planned for November 2013.

O’NEILL LEADS GOLDEN PERFORMANCE IN PABCON CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three-time PBA Tour title winner Bill O’Neill led Team USA to an eight gold, six silver and three bronze medal performance in the Pan American Confederation Championships which concluded Aug. 25 at Sunset Station’s Strike Zone in Henderson, Nev. O’Neill won men’s gold medals in doubles, five-player team and individual all-events, added a silver in trios and a bronze in the Masters finale. Tommy Jones, a 13-time PBA Tour winner, was O’Neill’s gold-medal partner in doubles and team, and added silvers in trios and all-events. Fellow PBA Tour champion Patrick Allen bowled with the championship team, along with non-pros John Janawicz (the men’s singles champion), Steve Smith and Marshall Kent.

Team USA’s women, including PBA member Liz Johnson, former PBA Women’s Series competitors Stefanie Nation, Diandra Asbaty and Shannon Pluhowsky; hall of famer Leanne Hulsenberg, and amateur Josie Earnest, gave the United States a sweep in the team competitions. Pluhowsky also won gold in the women’s Masters (defeating Johnson, 238-226, in the final match) and trios (with Johnson and Nation). Johnson won the women’s all-events title.

● PBA Tour titlist Brad Angelo and his wife Michelle have purchased South Transit Lanes, a 24-lane center in their Lockport, N.Y., hometown, according to BJI’s CyberReport.

● PBA Midwest Region rookie Derek Eoff’s streak of five consecutive runner-up finishes in his first five tournaments as a PBA member came to an end Sunday in Pleasant Hill, Iowa, when the Madison, Wis., resident finished 12th in the Premiere Bowling & Entertainment Center Cheetah Open presented by Brunswick.
