Time to get ready for winter
Here in New Orleans, it is just a bit early to start thinking about winter. We long for cooler weather, but won't have it until November, usually. And then not very cool. But for those in cooler climes, it's time to start thinking about getting the pond ready for its winter sleep. The most important thing that must be done is to remove all debris from the bottom. All that fish poop, decomposed leaf and other vegetation has to come out before ice arrives. With toxic gases occurring naturally, we must remove all the possible causes of even more.
I used to advocate a total clean out after leaves were finished falling, but with the global concern for our water supply and ever increasing drought conditions, I have rethought the cleanout process. Using a vacuum cleaner will remove the muck and leaves at the bottom, save money, time
and water.
Pond vacuum cleaners used to be pretty poor imitations of swimming pool vacs, but lately they are build especially for ponds, are easier to use and actually do what they advertise. See one here.
