This week is actually a pretty busy one in history, so I’m including a newsletter extra! Here are a few other events I took note of in my research …

September 22: In 1862, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, stating that all slaves in the Confederate states were free. The declaration turned the Civil War into a Union crusade against slavery. (On a much lighter note, the immensely popular TV sitcom Friends debuted in 1994. It ran for 10 seasons.)

September 23: Victoria Claflin Woodhull, the first woman to run for U.S. President, was born in 1838. With only three years of formal education, “The Woodhull” also became one of the first female stockbrokers on Wall Street. She was a newspaper editor, a suffragist, and an outspoken activist for social equality.

September 24: In 1948, Japanese industrialist Soichiro Honda established the Honda Motor Company, producing cheap motorcycles which were bikes fitted with engines. It began manufacturing cars in the 1960s. In 2000, Honda released the ASIMO robot as part of its research in artificial intelligence and robotics.
