Much has been made about the accusation that Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin tried to ban books while the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. Let me be clear about my own political party affiliation--I have none. I have identified myself as an Independent since 1980. I do have a few reflections about the hoopla.

I as a public librarian would be happy if city councils and mayors were aware of the proper procedure for requesting a reconsideration for any library material. It would actually save a lot of problems if they could respond to complaints knowledgeably.

If you check http://www.FactCheck.org you will find that most of the information in the emails being circulated is false. The booklist is false, as many of the books were not in print while Mrs. Palin was mayor.

If someone wants to disagree with Sarah Palin about her policy positions that's fine, but to spread lies is cheap and belittles all opinions. If you cannot debate on fact than you do not have a firm stand.
