Flights of Fantasy Tatting Patterns Inspired by Myth and Legend Martha Ess ©2013

I am just thrilled and delighted with this new book filled with tatted flights of whimsy and historically themed ideas. This is a spiral bound paperback book of 38 pages, 8.5" x 11" in size. Presented by Master Tatter, Martha Ess, this is a set of patterns to delight and challenge all tatters.

The beginning tatter might want to start with the Unicorn Mother and the Baby Unicorn to build up experience in the block tatting technique which form the backbone of these figures. There is also a block tatted tiny knight in silver armor which is poised to defend a cute damsel in distress from the Baby dragon. The dragon is mostly ring and chain with just a few split rings and a beaded down picot to add interest.

Both the rampant Pegasus and Unicorns designs are so well executed as to make every tatter eager to attempt them. And winding across several pages are a St. George style dragon and a Chinese dragon (my personal favorite!)

There are full color photos of all the projects and for clarity many of the diagrams have color coded sections, too. Martha includes in the book four pages with abbreviations, explanations of terms and aids for reading the diagrams. There are four types of bead placement covered and several methods of joining. Some of the joins used are in uncommon positions necessary for the sake of the design. Her explanations of the Daisy Double Stitch and Inverted tatting are well worth studying for all of us.

Tea is for Tatting

I highly recommend adding this book and all of her books to your library. The copy for my personal tatting reference library was gifted to me by Martha Ess at Palmetto Tat Days 2013. G. Seitz
