Recently the Antique Pattern Library received permission to post the issues of the Workbasket magazine online. Until they are available, the tatting patterns will continue to be modernized and shared online here also.
This pattern requires 50 medallions and 36 fillers motifs to create a 20" x 10" (51 mm x 26 mm) table mat. The rewritten pattern utilizes the mock picot, split ring and split chain techniques to tat the entire medallion in one pass. And this is what makes this pattern just perfect to learn or review those techniques
Abbreviations:
R = ring
CH = chain
+ = join
- or p = picot
mp = mock picot
ds = double stitch
SR = split ring (/)
SCH = split chain
rw = reverse
clr = close ring
The medallion requires tatting a round center ring and using the mock picot to climb out into the next round. This new round is entered by means of a split ring (following the mock picot.) This round has rings which join to the center ring but do not join to each other. Please keep an eye on the length of this ring's side picots, too long and they will overlap each other and perhaps look a bit untidy. These rings alternate with a chain.
The last chain will be a split chain, stopping at the last picot, attaching to the bottom of the initial split ring, wrapping the bare thread back to the last picot spot. It is finished with a mock picot and followed by a split ring which functions as the left ring in the pair on the last round.
Center R:
R 2 - (1/4") x 7, 2 clr, use mp climb out to next round.
Round 1:
Climb out with split ring from the center round ring.
SR 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 / 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 clr rw
*CH 3 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 3 rw
R 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 + (join to p of center round) 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 clr rw
Repeat from * around to the last chain.
On the last chain stop at the last picot, attach thread to the bottom of the initial split ring, wrap the bare thread back to the last picot spot. Then finish with a mock picot and followed by a split ring which functions as the left ring in the pair on the last round.
Round 2:
Use the mock picot to enter the last round and begin the split ring.
R 5 / 5 clr do not reverse work and leave no bare thread showing
*R 5 + (join to the first picot on the next chain in round 1) 5 clr rw
CH 6 - 6 - 1 - 6 - 6
R 5 + (join to the last picot on the same) 5 clr rw
Repeat from * around. Attach each medallion (except those on the outside) by two sides using the double picots in the center of the chains of last round.
The filler motif is also a round center ring.
Center R 2 - (1/4") x 7, 2 clr, use mp climb out to chain.
CH *6 + (join to medallion) 6 + (join to next center ring picot)
Repeat around from *.
The only question that remains is whether to make the little fillers first and join to them as each medallion is made.
