September 29 2015 Today in History Newsletter

Hello!

Before the end of another baseball season, here is this week’s feature from Today in History at BellaOnline:

September 29 – Vandals Rip Up NY Giants Field
On September 29, 1957, seventy-five seasons after they started playing ball, the New York Giants played their final game. Then they flew west to San Francisco. How did their fans react? With mixed emotions, apparently.

On the same dates mentioned in the article, I found another couple of curiously related events from across the Atlantic …

September 29: Horatio Nelson was born in Norfolk in 1758. He would go on to become an admiral in Britain’s Royal Navy, commanding successful campaigns during the Napoleonic Wars. During the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, which ended in another British victory, Nelson was shot and killed aboard the HMS Victory.

September 30: The foundation stone for Nelson’s Column was laid in London’s Trafalgar Square in 1840. At 170 feet tall, the monument is a Corinthian column topped by a larger-than-life sandstone statue of Nelson. It is “guarded” by four bronze lions whose most frequent function is to be mounted on by happy tourists.

I hope you’ll enjoy this week’s feature! As always, I welcome any feedback you might have for me. Send me a personal note by clicking on my name at the top of any Today in History page, which will take you to a page with a comment box.
