SOUTAR FINISHES SENIOR TOUR SEASON WITH RECORD 250 APPEARANCES
Dave Soutar of Bradenton, Fla., the only player ever to win both the USBC Masters and USBC Senior Masters, extended his record for appearances in PBA Senior Tour events to 250 tournaments by competing in the 2011 season-finale in Dayton, Ohio.

Soutar, who turned 71 on March 7, is an 18-time PBA Tour champion and seven-time PBA Senior Tour winner. For his entire career beginning in 1961, Soutar has bowled in a total of 1,109 PBA events (661 PBA Tour, 93 regionals, 105 senior regionals and 250 Senior Tour).

In the overall tournament race, the all-time leader is Ernie Schlegel of Vancouver, Wash., with a grand total of 1,165 appearances (829 PBA Tour, 218 regionals, 92 Senior Tour and 26 senior regionals).

Schlegel was the owner of the all-time PBA Tour participation record until Tom Baker of King, N.C., quietly assumed to the leadership position during the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season. By competing in the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions, U.S. Open, Mark Roth GEICO Plastic Ball Championship and Dick Weber PBA Playoffs, Baker increased his total number of PBA Tour events to 831, two more than Schlegel. Baker has a combined 1,107 PBA tournament appearances (168 regionals, 70 Senior Tour and 38 senior regionals), which ranks third on the all-time list, two behind Soutar. Dale Eagle is fourth with 1,019 events (691 PBA Tour, 76 regionals, 182 Senior Tour and 70 senior regionals).

All four of the all-time tournament participation leaders are members of the PBA Hall of Fame.

BUSY LABOR DAY WEEKEND REGIONAL SCHEDULE WILL KICK OFF WINTER SEASON
There is a busy schedule of PBA Regional tournament activity on schedule over the Labor Day weekend, the traditional starting point of the 2011-12 winter league bowling season.

In the PBA East Region, senior players will visit Strike Zone in Pottsville, Pa., for the Strike Zone Senior Open. In the South Region, George Pappas’ Victory Lanes will host the Mooresville Budweiser Open.

The Central and Midwest Regions will congregate in Ft. Wayne, Ind., for a standard event as well as a senior tournament. Non-senior players will compete in the 26th annual Bud Light Fort Wayne Open at Georgetown Bowl while senior players will bowl in the gift.com Senior Open.

Southwest Regional players will visit Golden, Colo., for the Golden Bowl Open sponsored by MillerCoors.
The West and Northwest Regions also will combine for standard and senior events at Strikes@Elk Grove in Elk Grove, Calif.

SHAFER WINS HURRICANE-SHORTENED MIL-RAY FOODS OPEN IN NEW JERSEY
Four-time PBA Tour winner Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., defeated Matt O’Grady of South Amboy, N.J., 203-187, to win the Hurricane Irene-shortened PBA East Region Mil-Ray Foods Open at 30 Strikes on Saturday, Aug. 27. It was Shafer’s second regional title of the 2011-12 season and the 17th of his career. He also earned $2,500.

The Mil-Ray Foods Open was originally scheduled to end on Sunday, but was converted to a one-day event in the wake of the hurricane forecast.

“It was certainly the correct call to change the event to one day,” said PBA East Region Tournament Director Russ Mills. “We had 20 cancellations, but it appeared everyone got out of town in good shape. Right now, I’m really more concerned about a couple of our upcoming events in northern New Jersey where there was quite a bit of flooding and power outages. But we’ll find out soon.”

In Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Dave Traber of Hebron, Ill. defeated amateur Dave Williams Jr. of Omaha, Neb. 226-222, to win the PBA Midwest Region Premiere Bowling Center Open on Sunday. It was Traber’s 27th regional victory and he earned $2,500 as he out-gunned a pair of PBA Hall of Famers on his way to the title. Traber defeated Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J. 205-192, in the semifinal match after Bohn edged Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 236-222, in the first stepladder match.

In the PBA West Region, Michael Haugen Jr. of Cave Creek, Ariz., defeated Marv Sargent of Temecula, Calif., 258-248, to win the Pain Center Open at Johnson Lanes in Sun City West, Ariz., on Sunday. The win was Haugen’s 14th in PBA regional competition and earned him $2,200.

In Greenville, Texas, Wes Malott from Pflugerville, Texas, defeated Mark Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, 200-185, to win the 6th annual PBA Southwest Region Greenville Open at DB’s Sports Grill and Bowl on Sunday. Malott won seven of his eight games in the single-elimination match play finals on his way to capturing his 12th regional title and a $2,300 prize.
