Let's Stamp Out Anonymous Tatting!

Too often vintage tatting patterns were published with the tatter listed as "A. Lady" or with only initials as in The Bath Tatting Book by P.P. Today's tatting historians have spent many hours pouring over antique publications looking for clues to the tatters names. From here forward, I call on tatters to be sure to put their name on their patterns even if they are being posted on a personal blog or website. Add a date, too.

And we should include more photos not of just the tatted lace but also of tatters tatting. A quick survey online found so very few photos of tatters actually in the act of tatting. Here are the few I found:

Charles "Lewis Carroll" Dodgson's aunt Lucy Lutwidge, tatter.

This Victorian Lady with leg o'mutton sleeves tatting has been used on many tatting publications.

Whistler sketched this lady tatting. (Too young to have been his mother, hmm.)

Lady Katharin Hoare, Author of "The Art of Tatting."

Carmen Sylva, aka Queen of Romania, wrote the preface to "The Art of Tatting" which book featured much of her bejeweled tatting.

Renoir's painting of a young lady tatting has such a sentimental look to it.

Tatters are indebted to the Coats and Clark Co. which published so very many tatting pattern books. Unfortunately, they seldom documented the tatting designer's name.

This is the type of illustration found most often for tatting, just the hands in motion. (Seldom do we see such brilliantly red fingernails, though.)

Hands tatting with tatting shuttles are easier to find...

...than hands tatting with tatting needles.

Here's the latest article from the Tatting site at BellaOnline.com.

Russian Tatting Books A short list of both paperback and hardback book of tatting patterns in the Russian language. Lots of black and white illustrations but many full color plates, too! The patterns run from traditional collars and doilies to antique reproductions and evena bit of jewelry and floral work.
