Letting Go of Grade Level Expectations
“Every baby develops differently” is a phrase most new parents hear from their child’s doctor and all child-rearing “experts”. We know most babies crawl somewhere between 5 and 10months, most walk in the area of 9 and 16 months. Most children will be toilet trained between 2 and 4 years of age. These variances are considered normal, even the variances as great as two years. Why is it, then, that when a child turns the magic age of five they are all expected to start developing along the same timeline? Variances are no longer considered normal, they are labeled “retarded development” or “gifted”.
