What is Malignant Hyperthermia?

Malignant hyperthermia is an inherited disease that causes a rapid rise in body temperature (fever) and severe muscle contractions when the affected person receives general anaesthesia. It is also known as Hyperthermia - malignant; Hyperpyrexia – malignant.

This free newsletter is put out weekly and provides a wealth of information for anybody living with or interested in Neuromuscular Diseases and the effect it has on people’s lives.

A Malignant Hyperthermia crisis during surgery can have devastating results as the patient can die if the symptoms are not treated immediately.
We lost a very dear friend as result of Malignant Hyperthermia which could not be successfully treated.

According to a top South African researcher all neuromuscular patients should insist that the physician and anaesthesiologists take the necessary precautions before, during and after surgery is performed.

Any questions, experiences or opinions? Let’s talk about this life-threatening condition and gather the necessary information to ensure that we can have knowledgeable conversations with surgeons and anaesthesiologists if we or our family ever need surgery.
