The Goddess of Love was known to the Greeks as Aphrodite and then to the Romans as Venus. This image has been said to be the most popular female statue throughout antiquity.

While there have been many interpretations of this female figure, few are still intact.
Perhaps the Venus de Milo comes to mind. Actually, it is rare to find female nudes before the 3rd century B.C.

The Carlos Museum of Emory University in Atlanta, GA is about to reunite a Roman statue of Venus that has been detached since 1836. The head sold for $50,00 and the body $968,000 (at Sotheby’s auction in N.Y.).

Surprisingly, the statue is only missing the right arm. This version of Venus has been called "charmingly prudish," as she seems to be startled by an onlooker (indicated by the direction of her gaze) after having removed her clothes. She coyly covers her femininity with her hands.

The Roman emperors used this subject from Greek literature to create statuary which would adorn their villas.
