Several recent studies have shown a decline in empathy and compassion in nurses, especially those entering the field as a second or third career. We need to ensure that we don't lose the skills and attitudes which make us nurses - caring for and about our patients is vital and empathy and compassion central to who we are. Rejuvenating one's self can help to rejuvenate and re-ignite the love of the profession, the empathy and compassion which brought us to become nurses.

I apologize that I did not get this week's newsletter out at its usual time. I had a little accident. I am fine now - thanks to wonderful nurses! I think being a patient is always a good way to remind ourselves about how important little things are to patients and how easy it is to forget when we are on the nurse side of the care. I'd love to hear from you about experiences and things you learned from being a patient instead of being the nurse! Let me know, perhaps I can pull them all together and can share them with the readers in a future article.
