Techniques of Art in Drawing & Painting
Most art aficionados are familiar with the Italian words ‘chiaroscuro’ and ‘sfumato’. ‘Disegno’ and ‘istoria’ are words predominately used in the history of art. I will explain further by citing examples.

Origins of the Human Heart in Art
The human heart was symbolically represented in ancient Egypt as well as in a Mesoamerican culture. In the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci would realistically draw this human organ. I will discuss this evolution.

Art and Art Books For Children
I have been asked by my readers which art books I would choose to introduce children to the world of art. I will discuss a book recommendation and a child's delight at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine.

Chihuly – Handcrafted Glass Artist Extraordinaire
Dale Chihuly studied at RISD and hails from the Pacific Northwest. His exhibit of uniquely handcrafted colored glass at the MFA Boston redefines the term ‘arts and crafts’.

Fake Art & Forged Antiquities
Dutch artist Han van Meegeren holds the distinction of being the master Vermeer forger of the 1930s. In 2003 the British Museum would buy a fake statue. More will follow.

Vincent Van Gogh - the Artist and His Life
Unlike the works of Picasso which can be explained by the loves in his life, the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh can best be understood by where he lived and worked. I will discuss ‘The Starry Night’ from his stay in Saint-Rémy as well as other notable paintings.

Albrecht Dürer - German Renaissance Artist
Albrecht Dürer was undoubtedly the greatest Northern European Renaissance artist in the late 15th century. Best known for his woodcut prints with religious and mythological themes, he also wrote books on geometry and human proportions.

Angels in Art - US Postage Stamps
The first US postage stamps were issued in 1847: Benjamin Franklin on a five cent stamp and George Washington on a ten cent stamp. The first angel (a weathervane of an angel holding a trumpet) appeared in 1965 on the US Christmas stamp. Other angel stamps would follow in subsequent years.

Ancient Columns & Greek Revival Architecture
Temples were built in ancient Greece using three orders of columns. Wanting to emulate this style, Thomas Jefferson was the architect of neo-classical buildings in the United States.

Washington in MFA Art of Americas Wing
The MFA’s new wing is devoted to the art of North, South and Central America. This Boston museum is well known for its holdings of paintings, silver, and furniture from Colonial New England. I will discuss paintings devoted to George Washington (General and President).
