In Tabatha Jean D’Agata’s book, Marvin Monster’s Teacher Jitters!, Marvin Monster and his classmates learn about the government offices in their town. Miss Witchafred takes the class on a field trip. They explore the city of Marshville.

Marvin Monster’s old teacher, Mr. Stein, is now Grim Castle Elementary school’s assistant principal. Miss Witchafred is the new second grade teacher. Ugly gossip circulates among the students about her. She is the meanest teacher and turns monsters into humans!

Miss Witchafed is a scattered-brain witch. Readers who are familiar with Aunt Clara on the Bewitched television series know the type of witch. Her spells go not as she plans. This causes some interesting situations.

The first stop is the Postal Tomb. There the children learn the mail is sorted by postal workers. Carrier bats make the deliveries. The children write a letter and buy a stamp.

The next stop is the Trash Yard. There they learn how the city trash is recycled. The trash is separated into piles of paper, glass, plastic and metal. Chomping gators make the objects reusable. Also, Marvin Monster and his classmates learn Miss Witchafred eats slime. Way cool!

They continue to the Chamber of Books (library). The classmates get their own borrower’s card. A city bus takes the class and teacher to each stop. The bus driver is frightened and leaves the bus. Miss Witchafred, to the children’ delight, drives the bus. They are in love with her.

At the end of the day, Marvin Monster learns how to mail a letter and how trash is recycled. He learns how to use the library and gets a library card. And the most important of all, he learns not to listen to gossip. Miss Witchafred is a great teacher and loads of fun.

Tabatha Jean D’Agata’s book, Marvin Monster’s Teacher Jitters!, is an early reader chapter book. It is for children (ages 6-8) making the transition from picture to chapter books. The chapters are short and there are sketches to give the reader visual clues. Bold, large text is easy to read. There are forty-eight pages in the chapter book.

The book is well-written and fun for children. Children love the monster kids. Tabatha Jean D'Agata teaches about government services with humor. Also, in her books she teaches the reader life skills or good manners. Best of all, the book is not a lecture, it is fun.

Marvin Monster's Big Date teaches children it is not good manners to break a promise. People are counting on them to keep their promise. Breaking a promise can hurt others feelings. Again, the book has humor and the monster kids.
