In Marvin Monster’s Big Date, Marvin attends school with other monster children in Marshville. It’s a small town on the outskirts of Transylvania. He is in the second grade. His classmates are zombies, goblins and werewolves.

Marvin has a big date. Reba has promised to walk with him to Grim Castle Elementary school. But to do so, he has to break his promise to Gretchen to walk with her. His mother warns the little monster. Monsters who break a promise grow toad-warts on their palms.

Lo and behold, Reba breaks her promise to Marvin. She walks to school with Bobby. As Tabatha Jean D’Agata writes, “the ditcher is ditched.” Marvin is crestfallen. As the day progresses, he learns just as Reba has hurt his feelings; he has hurt Gretchen’s feelings.

Marvin Monster’s Big Date opens a discussion on responsibility and kindness to others. The book is good for the classroom and home. Children learn life skills on how to treat people. Although, Marvin Monster’s big date is an innocence walk to school. It prepares children to act responsible and to show consideration when dating later in life. Plus, it is good manners to keep a promise. This is important at all stages of life.

Children will enjoy the imaginary monster world created by Tabatha Jean D’Agata. Marvin’s birthday is Friday, September 13. He goes to school and Mr. Stein is his teacher. And best of all, he has lots of friends. Who says zombies are not friendly?

The Marvin Monster series are great books for Halloween. Children will love to wear a costume representing their favorite monster in the book. Make sure your little monster does not break his promise to go trick-or-treating with another.

Marvin Monster’s Big Date is for children (ages 6-8) transitioning from picture to chapter books. The chapters are short. There are sketches of the monster’s activities. The paperback book has thirty-two pages.
