A recent study in Taiwan covering 2.8 million children discovered that 15,000 of them had Type 2 Diabetes - normally a disease found in overweight, older adults. The children were all overweight.
The report was made in the Journal of the American Medical Association and was startling in a country where type 2 diabetes was not thought to be a problem for children.
Type 2 diabetes is normally associated with adults over age 40 who have high blood pressure and are overweight. Doctors normally prescribe a low carb diet in order to keep the blood sugar levels down and to create a more even blood sugar level for those afflicted.
According to the US surgeon general, around 15% of children today are overweight, and children who are overweight have a 70% chance of becoming overweight adults, as their eating and exercise habits continue into their older years.
