Lycopene Research

Lycopene is a carotenoid antioxidant found to be protective against prostate cancer, colorectal cancers and bone loss. A study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, showed that it is ineffective when taken alone. The test group receiving isolated lycopene supplements had the same rate of prostate cancer as the placebo group.

Nature’s most concentrated source is tomatoes. But tomatoes have many other carotenoids, so the rest of the family is also present. Most other nutrients are ineffective and can even be detrimental when taken alone. For example, Beta-carotene, by itself, has been found to inhibit the positive functions of all the rest of the carotenoid family. So, it’s not surprising that, without the support of the full-spectrum carotenoid complex, isolated lycopene is also dysfunctional.
