How to Succeed In Your Career

Whether itís the start of a new year or taking time during the year to figure out how to make things better for you at work, there is always room for improvement. Setting arbitrary goals is not enough. You need to delve deeper into finding what will help you to succeed in your career. Here are some suggestions on areas to help you get started.

Stop focusing on problems, focus on fixing problems. So often all we can think about is the long list of issues. When we ask for help, we even add on additional problems without stopping to think of ways to fix the original problems. Focusing on the problem often leads to morale issues and depression. We become so focused on issues with our boss or co-workers we canít see the light. Try to focus on the positive. Take one problem and think of creative solutions to overcome the barrier you have set.

Stop being ordinary. Ever wonder why you have been unable to get promoted? Are you performing just enough to get by? Stop being average. If you work hard while everyone is looking and then slack off when they turn their backs, reconsider your game plan. Try working hard all the time; make it impossible to ignore you. There are great opportunities for you, should you take the time to seek them out. This is especially true when organizations are attempting to do more work with fewer people. Be a stand out!

Stop blaming others. Of course itís easy to blame your boss or co-workers for making your life miserable, but what are you doing to contribute to the situation. While you may just have a crazy boss or co-worker, walking around with a long face and feeling miserable isnít going to help your situation. Finding other co-workers to listen to you cry about your problems will not help either. Sometimes we just need to put on our big people clothes and learn to deal with it, or unfortunately, make the changes necessary to work somewhere else. Tough love, but itís necessary. You cannot force people to change the way you want them to, the only one you can change is you.

Are you certified in your field? Whether itís called credentials, certifications or accreditations Ė are you knowledgeable in your field? If you think that obtaining credentials is a waste of your time, think again. Becoming accredited in your field will substantially add to your net worth, not only in your current job, but also should you apply elsewhere. Not sure if there is a credential or certification for your career Ė check to see if there is an association or national organization for your field.

You can volunteer while working. Sure you have a life outside of work, but have you ever considered volunteering or ďgiving backĒ to your profession? There are so many needy organizations out there that cannot afford to pay for help. Consider finding an organization that can use your expertise. You will be helping others while building your own portfolio.

There are so many steps you can take to improve in your career. The first step starts with you!
