Halitosis or bad breath is defined as an unpleasant, offensive breath odor. It can be caused by a variety of things, including diet, illness, stress and gum disease. But, in most cases, decaying food and other waste in the mouth creates growth of odor causing bacteria.
Simply brushing the teeth and tongue twice a day and flossing on a daily basis will probably eliminate offensive mouth odor. If, after improving oral hygiene habits, bad breath does persist, visit the dentist. A checkup can detect or eliminate the possibility of gum disease. If this is not the source of the problem, a doctor can check for diabetes, infections, stress issues and hormonal changes, all of which can also cause halitosis.
