Introduction to the Chakras

Chakras have many different definitions and descriptions. I think the easiest way to understand is to imagine yourself standing and all along your spine are circling wheels of colored lights, pure energy. The word Chakra is a Sanskrit word for “wheel”. Each wheel is a powerful concentration of energy and the energy is transmitted up and down the spine regulating the flow of energy that runs throughout the physical body.

History tells us that the chakra system was first recognized in the eighth century. During this time people were searching for a way to understand the energy system within the body and how it is connected to our mind, body, and spirit. The Chakra system began to be used as a healing method. There are seven chakras that run along the spine each very individual in how it affects our physical, mental, and spiritual conditions.

The chakras are believed to be connected to the endocrine system in the body. An obstacle to a chakra can cause the energy to be blocked and the person to suffer from illness, or disease. Pain whether mind, body, or spirit is a signal that a chakra needs attention. The specific chakra would be related to the location of the pain or the range of emotions attached to that chakra.

Each chakra has its own unique characteristics such as: name, color, tones and sounds, smells, herbs and foods, types of yoga and dance, stones and crystals, affirmations, emotions, body placement, and on and on. All of this is important in balancing the chakra. Balancing a chakra is not easy is takes much focus and effort. Here are some methods that are used to establish balance: Chakra yoga, Chakra aromatherapy, Chakra sound therapy, meditation, Chakra sensory therapy, Chakra crystals and gemstones, Chakra color therapy, affirmations and visualizations.

Studying about the chakras will give you the intuition and knowledge you need to determine if you have a blockage and where it might be. You can then decide what methods you would chose to begin your own chakra therapy. It may take time, it may take practice, and trials and errors with methods, but over time you can become sensitive to what your body and mind are telling you and what therapy to reach for.

What I have presented here is a very simplified explanation of the chakra system. The study of chakras and transfer of energy within the body is an in depth science. It has an ancient history and theories vary, but it all was originally drawn from the Hindu scriptures, the Vedas.
