How To Save A Custom Pattern - Photoshop CS

Project Information: Skill level: Basic AdobeR PhotoshopR CS General tips

Patterns are used with several tools in Photoshop CS and the program comes with many preset patterns. But there will be times when you want to create your own pattern for a special project. In Photoshop CS it is easy to "define" a new pattern and save it to the list in the Pattern pop-up palette. Follow the steps below.

Pattern Pop-up Palette
Step 1. You can create a custom pattern from an entire image or from just part of an image. If you want to make your pattern from part of an image use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select that section of the image. Feather should be set to zero in the Options bar.

Step 2. On the Menu bar click Edit > Define Pattern to open the Pattern Name dialog box.

Step 3. Give your new pattern a name and click OK.

Your new pattern is now on the list in the Pattern pop-up palette. You can use any pattern with the Paint Bucket tool, Pattern Stamp tool, Healing Brush tool, Patch tool and the Layer Style dialog box.
