Did you know that an average day of walking results in a force of several hundred tons bearing down on your feet?
This is because you weigh more walking than standing. Walking is dead weight plus the push energy, which adds approx 30% to your standing weight.
So with all that weight on your feet it makes sense to check out your footprint before you choose walking footwear.
The easiest way to do this is to make a wet footprint when you step out of the bath or shower (a cork mat is ideal.) Look at it carefully
A normal footprint has a rise under the arch but joins the forefoot and the heel. This means when you walk the outside of your heel touches the ground first and your forefoot and toes are raised towards your shins. Your foot then rolls forward and inwards. This is called normal gait.
The faster your back leg is moved forwards then the quicker you will walk.
If you have normal gait then you need to make sure your walking shoes are flexible and have gentle support or cushioning with a low heel.
If your walking shoes have very stiff soles then you will notice that your feet make a slapping sound as they hit the ground and you land flat footed whilst your foot does not roll.
This can lead to shin pain so it is very important to ensure your shoes have flexible soles that bend at the ball of the foot.
If you are in any doubt about your gait then consult your local podiatrist.
