Going to a new yoga class can be intimidating. The most important thing to in your class experience is the teacher, or as I like to call it, “The heart of a yoga teacher.” The teacher can make or break the class. You may enjoy the environment and the class members are welcoming, but if the teacher’s attitude is daunting, unfriendly, or lacking in merit then the class is probably doomed. A yoga teacher should be bound by virtue and honor the traditions of her training. When joining a yoga class look for the best from your teacher.
•Teachers are responsible to help you have a good yoga experience. She should not say or do things that are inappropriate and jeopardized your comfort level.
•The language the teacher chooses to use in class should be straightforward and clean. Language is an expression of personality. It is the first line of communication and in a teaching environment should convey professionalism.
•The teacher should not show impatience toward a student. Patience is the practice. A teacher who is feeling frustrated should step back, take a deep breath, and then do what is necessary to help the student.
•There is never a reason for a teacher to be rude or unkind. A teacher should help build your confidence not tear it down. A teacher’s greatest responsibility is to protect the student’s well-being, body and mind.
•Compassion cannot be faked it lies in the true essence of a person. The expression of compassion can be felt from a true heart. Teachers may try to fake it but you will be able to tell if the teacher is lacking sincerity.
•Yoga teachers are not perfect, nor above reproach. However they should try to set the best example possible.
•Your teacher should try to protect your physical body through alignment suggestions keeping a sharp eye on her students. However there are times when it is important to step back and allow a student their own experience, as long as your safety is not at risk.
The greatest lessons you can learn from a teacher are genuine kindness, caring, thoughtfulness, and her understanding that each student is unique. She expresses her caring by offering a safe place to practice self-acceptance. In this way you will experience the, “Heart of your yoga teacher”.
Live well, practice yoga.
