Walk to End Breast Cancer

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. This grassroots organization was started in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker who promised her dying sister (Susan G. Komen) that she would do everything she could to end breast cancer forever. In 25 years, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has invested $1 billion in the battle against breast cancer.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, and you can find many Race for the Cure events to participate in. Take a look at the list of October Events to see if there is an event near you that you can enter. Race for the Cure events typically involve breast cancer survivors and supporters and can be an uplifting and worthy way for you to walk and provide support.

And, for diehard walkers, there are several Breast Cancer 3-day events you can join. These events entail walking 60 miles in three days to help raise money and support to end breast cancer. If you arenít quite up to that pace yet, maybe you could set a goal to train now so that you can participate next year.

Nearly 200,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the US this year. Over 40,000 women and over 450 men will die of breast cancer this year. Only 5 to 10 percent of breast cancer is due to heredity. Most women with breast cancer have no significant family history or other risk factors. The chance of a woman dying of breast cancer is about 1 in 33.

One of the best ways to survive breast cancer is early detection. Be sure to get mammograms as recommended by your doctor, and do monthly self-exams. To learn how to examine your breasts, click here for instructions and downloads Breast Self-Exam.

Walkers are health-conscious people. We enjoy the great, healthy feeling we get when we walk. Participating in causes and events such as those sponsored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a great way to give back to your community while sharing something you love with others. Why not pledge to give such an organization a dollar, a quarter or even a dime for every mile you walked this year? Or, perhaps donate a dollar for every mile you walk in October?

If you cannot participate in an event or walk and would like to help Race for the Cure anyway, you can easily Donate Online. While you are at it, why not purchase your own pink Promise Rings for just $5. Youíll get one for you and one for a friend.
