There are times when an Ethnic Beauty wants to especially shimmer and shine. There are occasions when one wants a look, a glance, or even the sweep of her lashes to guarantee drama. Those times a few tips for dramatically making up one's eyes can come in handy. Therefore, I want to share with you, the Ethnic Sisterhood, what I have learned, what I know.
Firstly, I know there are many ways to apply eye shadow. I'm also aware that a plethora of different looks may be achieved. However, most are predicated on a basic technique, which enables one to create nearly any look. I recommended trying out a new look a time or two before stepping into the limelight. These try-outs will enable one to get comfortable with a look, and with applying it, beforehand. Then while at an affair, an Ethnic Beauty will shimmer with confidence.
Following are things that may be used to dramatically make eyes: eyeshadow base, or foundation, translucent powder, three complimentary shades of shadow, a small eyeshadow brush, a medium eyeshadow brush, eyeliner, and mascara. Use all or less items at your discretion.
To begin, lay out your three complimentary shades of eye makeup -- a light, medium, and a darker tone. Then starting with clean skin and groomed brows, apply an oil-free foundation or an eye shadow base. Either one will even the skin tone on the lid, and cause the shadow to cling. Please note, base is not necessary, but recommended, to make a look last. Because who wants their look to nearly melt away before their big moment? My chicas and others with oily skin understand, because sadly, they too have experienced this. The rest of you, no laughing, please...
So we've cleansed and have applied our base or an oil-free foundation. Set it with translucent powder. Just a dab though because we don't want it to cake up. Now the fun part; we get to smooth on color. With the medium-sized eyeshadow brush or applicator, gently apply the medium (mid-range) shade of shadow on your eyelid, from the lid's lash line to your brow line, covering the ball of the eye.
Using the small brush, in the crease, apply the darker shade, sometimes called the contour color. Work from the inside of the eye, near the nose, outward. An Ethnic Beauty can 'play' with this more visible shade of shadow, to give eyes the illusion of different shapes. For drama, Why not sweep this darker shade to the outer corners of the lid? Whatever you do, blend the darker contour color with the main or medium shade. Then you'll want to use your lightest shade of shadow, often called highliter. Apply it sparingly on the brow bone.
For high drama, and to create a smoky effect, the use of eyeliner along the top lid is advisable. Getting the line right takes patience, but it is so worth it! Initially, you may need to gently pull the eyelid taut with one hand, while applying liner close to the top lash line with the other. Keep at it, and you may be able to produce the line with one hand. This top-lid eyeliner may also be gently smudged or even extended just beyond the outer edge of the eye. Doing so will create the smoking cat-eye seen in celebrity photos or your girlfriends' glamour shots. Try it, if it isn't for you, it is erasable, with a cotton swab and makeup remover.
If you own an eyelash curler, now would be the time to use it. Or simply apply mascara, leaving no clumped lashes. Other options are to also line the bottom rim of the eye. Pencil or powder liner will work well here. Or why not try a sparkly liquid liner atop your lid? Sephora makes this in a few can-do colors. An Ethnic Beauty may also have lush lashes adhered, or tiny rhinestones --the options are many. Just remember, normally, your daytime look should not rival that of the evening. Perhaps think of your daytime look as a prelude...to the show, with your nighttime glam being the show.
Enjoy dramatically making up your eyes-- if you want, and remember, whatever you wear, or not, should always cause you to feel comfortable, and beautiful. Understand too that all tips and techniques may not be for everyone, and that is okay. If you are like me, you realize that even if you never make use of some things, simply garnering knowledge can be empowering. Therefore, since you already are beautiful, let your shine radiate, whatever you choose to do.
