Yoga Journal Live Retreat 2014 Colorado

If you haven't attended a Yoga Journal retreat, well now is the time. The 2014 event is to be held at the YMCA of the Rockies, in beautiful Estes Park, Colorado. This year’s event runs Sept. 14-21, 2014. The conference offers a multitude of ways to be involved without spending the entire week. Here are some options:

•You can book for the entire week, Monday Sep. 14 – Sunday, Sept. 21
•Baron Baptiste presents his “Flow Immersion” from Sunday, Sept. 13-Wednesday. Sept. 16
•You can sign up for one of the Thursday, Sept. 17, Intensives, which are usually a six-eight hour hands on, practice workshop. There are several really good choices this year.
•There is the Main Weekend pass from Friday., Sept. 18-Sunday., Sept. 21
•Purchase the One Day Pass for Friday or Saturday.
•Last but not least is the 3 class pass, good for Friday or Saturday.

There is an amazing assortment of classes offered, for everyone, from the beginner, Master Teacher, young, mature, elderly, and all shapes and sizes, you will be sure to find something to suit your taste. The classes fill up fast so get there early. Take your mat, blanket, block and strap.

My experience with the classes was intimidating at first. So many to choose from, so much to learn, and not to mention the incredible line up of instructors. But once I stepped foot into my first class I was immersed in yoga and community. This class was centered on proper alignment and lasted 90 minutes. Even though I am a seasoned instructor I left the room sweating with my muscles shaking. I was very excited and lucky to attend a class led by Rodney Yee. He has a gentle humble, spirit and was a comfortable personable teacher. I felt like I was melting as I left the class, my muscles turned to jello, I was so relaxed.

Lodging can be made at the YMCA of the Rockies. They have a variety of offerings, such as rooms to share (up to 4 per room). There are a limited number of cabins available. Or if you prefer you can stay in the fun tourist town of Estes Park, which is only a short distance from the YMCA of the Rockies.

I stayed in one of the shared rooms at the YMCA. Upon entering the building I thought of my dorm in college, but I was pleasantly pleased with the accommodations. The floorplans varied but my room was spacious, clean and comfortable with 2 large bunk beds. Each room had its own bathroom. Large windows opened up to a view of the stately Rocky Mountains and there was a cool breeze at night. The cabins are located further from the main event and offer more privacy.

In between classes be sure to take a stroll through the “Yoga Marketplace” where you can browse products and services such as, yoga apparel and accessories, jewelry, nutrition and natural health and beauty produces, books, and much more. I found books there that I haven’t been able to find anywhere else.

The dining space was a huge hall filled with round tables inviting an easy seating arrangement to sit, eat, chat, drink coffee with old friends and make new friends. All meals were vegetarian and from my personal experience they were delicious, made with fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grain cereals, just to start. There were a creative variety of salads, and my favorite, hearty fresh baked bread. The price of the meals is included in whichever package you purchase.

September is breathtaking in the Rockies and a superb atmosphere to take off for some alone time with nature. Take a hike, find a spot to meditate, sit in a meadow and read a book. But keep your eyes open it is definitely the time of the elk mating season.

Whether you go alone or with friends makes no difference. There are hundreds of people from all over the world and all walks of life. You will always be able to find someone to walk, talk, sit and share their love of yoga with you. Live well, practice yoga.
