Linda Sue Grimes completed the Ph.D. in Literature and Rhetoric/Composition at Ball State University in 1987. She taught in the Writing Program at BSU from 1983 until 1998. She serves as Feature Writer for the Poetry topic at Suite101.com. She also maintains Classic Poetry, her personal Web site that offers assistance to students who are frustrated in their study of poetry.
Why is a Poet Interested in the Republican Party?
When Grimes enrolled in college in 1964, she planned to major in American history and German and minor in Spanish. Later, she changed her major, because she discovered an intense interest in poetry and creative writing. Although she did not pursue the study, she never entirely lost interest in history and politics.
After the events of September 11, 2001, she realized how deficient her knowledge of history had become. She wanted to understand why Osama bin Laden harbored such hatred for the United States. So she started to research and read and listen to what President Bush had to say and what he planned to do. Her interest in history, politics, and current events intensified, and she now continues to read and research in these areas.
Democrat Turned Republican
Grimes has become convinced that the purpose of government is simply to protect the inalienable rights of its citizens; therefore, she reasons that the best government is a limited government, with low taxes, with an emphasis on strong national defense, a government that stresses individual growth, freedom, and development. She does not accept the idea that the government should function to guarantee the outcome or results of its citizens´ endeavors.
Before Grimes began to pay attention to politics, she had always assumed she was a Democrat, because her father had been a Democrat, but through her research and study of the policies and principles of both parties, she discovered that the Republican Party better reflects her political convictions.
About writing for the Republican Party site, Grimes says:
"Politics is a broad area of study, and people become hardened in their endorsement of a party, which often leads to covering the truth instead of revealing it. On this site, I plan to analyze, not proselytize. I will eludicate, rather than endorse. Most of all, I hope to learn a lot and share what I learn with my valued readers."
Thank you for visiting the Republican Party at BellaOnline.
