My interest in Russia started while I was studying music at Manchester University. Here I studied Soviet composers, and life in the USSR in general.

Some years later I traveled to Moscow to teach English on a 9-month contract, and ended up staying nearly 3 years! I began studying the language and discovering Russian cuisine, customs, modern music and more. An avid traveler, I have been to more than 30 Russian towns across 6 time zones.

I currently live in Volsk, a small town in the Saratov region of Russia, where I teach English in a cement factory (yes, really!) In my free time I like to go out to the Volga or the hills if it’s good weather; otherwise I read about folk medicine and folklore, and try to learn the balalaika.
