Sale of Munch’s 'The Scream' Breaks Records

In May 2012 the only version of this iconic painting in a private collection went on Sotheby’s auction block with results above estimates.

Although the new owner of "The Scream" is unknown (the person placed a phone bid), there is much speculation as to whether the buyer is from Asia or the Middle East. Nevertheless, "The Scream" broke the world record, selling for 119.9 million.

The symbol of "The Scream" epitomizes a society’s anxiety of the 20th & 21st centuries and changed the course of art history from Impressionism to Expressionism.

This version, pastel on board, was painted in 1895 and is unique from the other three versions that reside in museums in Norway.
Not only is it the most colorful and vibrant, but Munch hand painted the frame which included a poem that reveals the artist’s inspiration.

In the poem, Edvard Munch described himself as "shivering with anxiety" and he felt "great screams in nature."

The painting was owned by billionaire Norwegian businessman Petter Olsen, whose father was a friend and patron of Munch.
He said he had "lived with this work all his life and its power and energy have only increased with time."
Olsen plans on using the proceeds from the sale of "The Scream" to fund a new museum, art center and hotel in Hvitsten, Norway.

The works of art that now follow "The Scream" in terms of its price paid at auction are:
Albert Giacometti’s "Walking Man I" which held the previous record since 2010 for 104.3 million, followed by Pablo Picasso’s "Boy With a Pipe (The Young Apprentice)" which sold for 104.1 million in 2004.
