Quilt Blocks of the States - Tennessee

Tennessee - 12" Quilt Block

The next block in our State Quilt Block Series is Tennessee. This block looks complicated, but it’s quite easy if you take it a step at a time. You’ll notice that there are four quarters that are identical, and that each quarter is actually divided in two.

To print out the A, B, D and E templates Click here.

Here’s a black and white map for easy identification of templates and their location

Cutting Instructions

Light Fabric (White):

  • cut four D templates
  • cut four E templates
  • cut four 4¼” squares, cut diagonally twice into 8 triangles (C)

Medium Fabric (Red):

  • cut four D templates
  • cut four E templates

Dark Fabric (Blue):

  • cut four D templates
  • cut four E templates

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1: Cut out all of the pieces required according to the template map above and lay them out on your work surface

Step 2: Let’s make the top right hand quarter first. We put the diamond together first. Take each of the diamond templates and sew them together in color order, red, white and blue.

Step 3: Take the B template piece and sew it to the left side of the diamond unit and take the C template and sew it to the right side of the diamond unit.(see diagram)

Step 4: Do the same for the remainder of the quarter. (see below).

Step 5: Now sew the two eigths together to form a quarter of the Tennessee star.(see diagram)

Step 6: Make up three more quarter units and sew them together to form a 12” finished block.

Your block should measure 12-1/2" on all sides. It will measure 12" finished size when it is sewn into a quilt.
