Three Ways to Style Long Straight Hair

Guest Author - Lynne Chapman

There is never a reason to wear the same old hair style day-in and day-out when you have long straight hair. It is easy to change your style in just a few minutes.
To create this half updo, part off the top portion of your hair. Back-comb the entire top section at the base and spray lightly with hair spray. Use more back-combing in the crown for more height is desired. Smooth your hair back with your hands. Experiment with the amount of hair you put into your half updo – either pulling up just the hair above the cheek bones or pulling all the hair from ear level up as is shown in the illustration. Each of these styles will give your hair style a different effect. You may use a comb to finish smoothing away any sign of the teasing. Catch the hair in the back with a clip or roll the ends under and secure it with hidden bobby pins.

How many times have you pulled your hair into a ponytail only to discard the look because of the skinned back – no hair – effect? That sleek flat style was fine when we were ten but it is not attractive on many adult faces. Today’s ponytails are not pulled back tightly. Rather, they are left full while still being held firmly in place.

Create this simple pony tail by back-combing your hair very lightly all over. Spray the back-combing with hair spray and smooth it back with a brush. Be careful not to brush out the back-combing. Use your hands to pull the hair back and catch it at the back of your head – mid way down - and secure it tightly with a covered elastic band. To adjust the ponytail so that it is closer to your head, grab some of the pony tail at each side and pull at opposite angles. To adjust the height of the ponytail, grab a ‘little’ hair at the top and pull up gently. To get more fullness in the crown, place the side of your hand on your head just above the elastic. Press and push up on the hair while you hold the elastic band in place with your other hand. This will loosen the hair at the crown.
To change and dress up the look of your ponytail, add a headband. First, create the poofy ponytail as described above. Choose a narrow headband and slide it on. Either flatten the hair behind the bangs with the headband or allow some fullness by sliding it forward slightly to return a little poof to the front.
