Project Dogwaffle - Digital Painting Software

When I started writing for BellaOnline, one of my first articles was Digital Painting In Real Time. It was an introduction to digital painting software. While doing research for that article I discovered an amazing digital painting program called Project Dogwaffle by Dan Ritchie. I took a test drive and found the freeware version to be very user friendly and the digital painting results surprisingly realistic.

Since that first article, the creator of Project Dogwaffle has released his newest version (v 1.6). If you haven't downloaded the demo for this shareware, take some time to check it out. Project Dogwaffle is no longer freeware but you get so much for the small price that you will think it was free. This program has an extensive list of features, and I will discuss several of the new additions.

PD

Pressure-sensitive tablet. For those digital artists who hate to draw or paint with a mouse, you will be glad to know that you can now use your favorite pressure-sensitive tablet with Project Dogwaffle.

Onionskins. You create animations by drawing a series of images. Then these images are put together in a sequence to simulate movement. The new "see thru" Onionskin feature makes the animation process much easier by allowing the artist to view the previous frame from underneath the current frame.

Shading and lighting. This is another task that Project Dogwaffle handles well. You can achieve shading and lighting effects that simulate artificial or natural light. This is especially useful for space and fantasy art.

Digital Art Media. But Project Dogwaffle still does what it does best which is simulating various natural art media and the traditional painting process. You have an extensive list of digital art media to choose from such as watercolor, pen, pencil, airbrush and more. From there you can further refine your digital painting by controlling aspects such as transparency, drying time, smearing, blending, brush tips, surface texture and much more. There are several features that help you to achieve realistic results when painting grass, trees, hair and fur.

Now that I have convinced you that Project Dogwaffle is worth a look, there are several sites on the web dedicated to PD. You can start by visiting the site owned by the creator of PD. Dan Ritchie's website Squirreldome.com has a lot of information about PD. You can also visit his online gallery of images that he created with PD. You will find it on the Renderosity.com website. There are discussion groups and online galleries dedicated to PD artists. Just type Project Dogwaffle into your favorite search engine.

The best site for getting information, for downloading the demo, and for purchasing the latest version of PD is TheBest3D.com. This site is the place to go for tutorials, freebies, activities and projects, and mush more. Check out the DOTM --Dogwaffler of the Moment section which features the artwork of various PD artists. You will be amazed with the variety of artwork that can be achieved with this software. Also visit the What's New section for the lastest Doggybag which contains new add-ons, new brushes and more. Finally check out the What's Cool and What's Possible sections for gallery images and more information about the newest features.
