Enjoy Life and Have Fun without Spending Too Much

Enjoy Life and Have Fun without Spending Too Much
We tend to think that in order to have fun we need to spend a lot of money. But often the simpler things are more fun, especially if you have children. Here is a list of suggestions of family friendly activities you can do that are free or nearly free.

Google search

The first thing to do is a Google search for free things to do with the area that you live. For my city, there are 6 pages of things listed to do for free.

Check for festivals or events nearby

Many cities have free events. Regularly check your local newspapers for information and dates.

Walk in the park

Walking with young children or with a loved one is a pleasure that doesn’t cost anything. For added fun bring a picnic and don’t forget the blanket.

Go on a hike

If you prefer to walk on rougher terrain, you can go for a hike in a Regional Park. You get more of a natural environment and less of a planned, designed area to enjoy.

Photograph wildlife

While you are on your hike, consider photographing wildlife. Once you have a digital camera it doesn’t cost anything to take lots of photographs.

Camping

If you love the outside environment you may consider spending a few nights under canvas.

Cycle

Younger children can cycle round the local park, older children and adults can cycle a trail.

Watch the sun rise or set

Even if you are not sleeping under the stars, there’s something magical about a sunset. But also consider getting up early and watching the sun rise from a local hill. That is a memory that your children will cherish for a long time to come.

Going to the beach

If you live near a beach, it’s always a fun activity to spend a day at the beach. If you don’t want to spend too much, pack your own lunch.

Museum

Many local museums are free to visit and frequently have volunteer experts who are just waiting to talk to you. Some other museums have one day a month where they offer reduced or free admission, also keep a look in your local papers for 2-for-1 coupons. Many museums have a yearly membership where you pay once and then can visit as often as you like for a year. These work out reasonably priced in the long run.

Movie night at home

If there are more than a few in your family, going to the movies can work out quite expensive. But if you get a movie from the library and pop your own popcorn, it’s a cheap fun night in. In our family, we like to snuggle together on the sofa wrapped in blankets.

Family game night

Children love playing games with adults. Instead of having a movie night, have a game night. Our favorites include Pictionary, Family Feud and Apples to Apples.

Many fond memories are not made at expensive places, but on cheaper, more relaxing fun outings. You don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy yourself and bond together with the people you are with.
